Yolanda was diagnosed with smoldering-asymptomatic multiple myeloma over a decade, and that was reclarified after getting a second opinion. She didn’t experience any dire symptoms that would conclude her diagnosis. Her primary care doctor ran typical labs and found high levels of protein, which led to a roller coaster of finding a hematologist, and then a myeloma oncologist.
Most of her initial trials experienced were due to a doctor with little experience and witness to younger population diagnosed with multiple myeloma (Diagnosed in 30’s); therefore, it was suggested to proceed with aggressive treatment with questionable methods. Yolanda and her husband found guidance with a second opinion which concluded asymptomatic with a watch and wait. There was a short stint of radiation treatment due to a protruding chest sternum; however, further treatment was necessary exactly 5 years after, when her condition became active. Treatment included VRD (Velcade, Revlimid, and Dexamethasone) which brought her numbers down. It was suggested to start Kyprolis which was fairly new to push for an aggressive approach, which led to complete remission.
Today Yolanda is a Certified Personal Trainer- incorporating health, wellness, and diet in this continuous journey. She is a certified Patient Leader lending her time in advocacy and the importance of Participatory Medicine.
